The
Chinon vineyards cover an area of 2000 hectares lying on either side
of the river Vienne. Chinon wine can be recognised by its ruby colour,
its aroma of violets its personality varies according to the soil on
which the vines grow:
-
sandy soils produce light, fruity, aromatic wines which are pleasant
while still young
- clay soils on sloping ground or slightly higher flat land produce
wines which age well, full-bodied and tannic yet subtle, with diverse
aromas.
This
prestigious brotherhood of wine connoisseurs holds its meetings
in Chinon in the "Caves Painctes" which inspired the Temple
of the Divine Bottle where Pantagruel and Panurge, Rabelais's
mythical characters, ended their long journey in search for
truth. The brotherhood holds a solemn meeting four times a year
when new "knights" are enthroned. Chapitre de la Saint-Vincent
